Former Indian wicket-keeper, Deep Dasgupta, believes that Ricky Ponting needs to be more balanced in his assessment of Indian players as he coaches a lot of current Indian players in IPL.
Three-time World Cup winner, Ricky Ponting, while answering a question from the Twitter handle of 7cricket had emphatically declared that he does not see India making even 200 runs in the fourth innings of the third Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
However, Cheteshwar Pujara (77 off 205 balls), Rishabh Pant (97 off 118 balls), Hanuma Vihari (23* off 161 balls), and Ravichandran Ashwin (39* off 128 balls) showed great resilience, grit, and application against the lethal Australian attack and pushed the match to draw.
Deep Dasgupta praised Ricky Ponting as a great coach but said that he doesn’t rate Indian players very highly, at least in red-ball cricket.
AUS v IND 2020-21: “Australia have the edge going to Brisbane,” claims Ricky Ponting
“Obviously he doesn’t rate them too high at least when it comes to red-ball cricket. I mean that’s pretty much clear. I have heard both things about Ricky Ponting as a coach. A lot of people say a lot of good things about Ricky Ponting as a coach. That’s his opinion fair enough.” Deep Dasgupta told Sports Today.
Ricky pointing is the coach of IPL franchise Delhi capitals and the former Indian wicket-keeper said it will be interesting to see what do they have to say to each other when Ricky Ponting will meet the likes Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, and Rishabh Pant in two months time for IPL 2021.
“He is gonna meet the same people in the dressing room in two months’ time. I really want to be a fly on that wall and here to what these guys have to say. I mean both parties, Ricky on one side and all the other Indian players who are playing for his team on the other side what do they have to say to each other.
I would like to see a little more balance. He has been with a lot of Indian players. Maybe he got his assessment wrong about Indian players.” said Deep Dasgupta.
