AUS v IND 2020-21: “Racism can’t be tolerated; hoping for strict action by CA,” tweets Jason Holder

The racial abuse incident concerning India’s Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah during the recent SCG Test against Australia has sparked sharp criticism from all quarters of the cricketing world.

Bumrah and Siraj were subjected to harsh racial slurs on days 3 and 4 of the third Test in Sydney by a bunch of unruly fans in the stands. After the duo and captain, Ajinkya Rahane brought the issue to the match officials’ attention, the play was halted as police escorted the group out of the stadium.

Cricket Australia tendered an unreserved apology to the Indian team and concerned players while launching an investigation into the same, parallel to the one being conducted by the New South Wales police.

Indian cricket fraternity had criticized the conduct of Australian fans as former India captain Gautam Gambhir called for a stop to racial abuse of players, which occurs in places like Australia and South Africa.

Another international captain in West Indies’ Jason Holder also took to Twitter to air his views of the same. Holder was at the forefront of the West Indies team’s campaign in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as they traveled to England for the first international series after the Coronavirus-forced lockdown was lifted in the world.

Holder, since then has been actively speaking out against prevalent racism in cricket and society as of whole and condemned the recent incident that happened with Indian players in Sydney.

He tweeted, “I really hope this incident is dealt with severely by CA. THIS MUST STOP! Racism can’t be tolerated, things like this shouldn’t take away from a great series”
